Black crocheted cotton gloves with the original tag still attached. The tag reads ‘A.C. Article Garanti Entierement Crochet a la main’ which translates a 100% Guaranteed Hand Crochet Item. These gloves were made in the factory of Auguste Callet, the Franche-Comté lace industry in Vesoul (city in eastern France).
Auguste settled in Vesoul because land and river transport were developed and by the proximity of the cotton industry in the Vosges and Alsace. His wife was an embroiderer and designed all the patterns. The factory focussed on making gloves, curtains, trimmings and lace collars. This industry has disappeared, replaced by the mechanization of the lace industry. These gloves were found in France in a deastock lot preserved by the granddaugther of Auguste Callet.
