Latvian traditional mittens are unique with their pattern diversity, combination of colors and usefulness. They emphasize Latvian fashion taste, joy, creativity, skill and perception of the world. Mittens are one of the most distinctive and beautiful expressions of Latvian identity, which persists today. Archaeological excavations indicate that mitten knitting and wearing traditions started around 10th century. Many of the patterns are location specific.
Mittens are hand knitted from wool yarn, 28 cm (11.0 inches) long, 11 cm (4.3 inches) wide, thumb length 7 cm (3.0 inches), thumb width 4 cm (1.6 inches). They will keep warm and fit on womans hands or smaller mans hands.
Mittens are knitted by a professional grandmother. 🙂
